BEIJING/WASHINGTON — Chinese state media gave prominent coverage to President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the United States on Friday, highlighting his meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump and emphasizing the importance of dialogue, cooperation and stability in China–U.S. relations.

The People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist Party of China, prominently featured Xi’s arrival ceremony at the White House, including photographs of Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, being welcomed by President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

The visit also received extensive coverage across Chinese state media, with reports focusing on the discussions between the two leaders and broader issues shaping China–U.S. relations. Xi’s remarks at the White House emphasized continued communication, cooperation and efforts to prevent conflict between the two countries.

The Global Times, an English-language newspaper under the People’s Daily, has also published commentaries calling for China and the United States to pursue a more stable relationship and manage their differences through dialogue.

Artificial intelligence is emerging as one of the important areas of discussion between the two countries. Xi said China and the United States, as major AI powers, have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage artificial intelligence in ways that serve the public interest and keep the technology under human control.

However, the two countries continue to have significant differences over AI, trade, technology and geopolitical issues. Recent reporting indicates that AI safety and technological competition remain important areas of tension alongside efforts to stabilize bilateral relations.

Xi’s three-day state visit, which runs from September 23 to 25, is his first visit to Washington in more than a decade. The trip is being closely watched as the two countries seek to manage disagreements while maintaining dialogue on trade, technology, security and other global issues.

The highly publicized reception at the White House, including a formal military ceremony and meetings between the two leaders and their spouses, has also received extensive attention in Chinese media.

Xi said the two countries should strengthen communication, expand areas of cooperation and avoid conflict and confrontation. He also stressed that cooperation between China and the United States could contribute to addressing wider global challenges.

The coverage reflects the significance Beijing places on the visit at a time when China and the United States are simultaneously seeking greater stability and competing over trade, advanced technology and strategic interests.
